The North West Coastal Forum is pleased to announce a free national conference - 'Coastal Engineering Solutions' running from 24th to 25th March 2010 at the Blackpool Hilton.
Coastal change constantly challenges us to come up with new, innovative, affordable solutions to managing our coastline. Nationally, Government policy is shifting focus from defending at all costs to an approach focusing on defending only where need can be justified. This conference is designed to explore the social, economic and environmental benefits that good schemes can bring, both during construction and in the long-term, for example use of local labour and increased tourism. This will be illustrated by use of good practice case studies of both hard and soft coastal engineering from the North West and elsewhere. We will also look at how coastal management decisions can be aided by development of a strong evidence base and the interface between coastline management and planning. The conference aims to:
The conference, organised with the help of North West and North Wales Coastal Group and sponsored by Birse Coastal, will feature case studies from the North West and other areas of the UK and will include an opportunity to visit the multi-award winning coastal defence scheme at Cleveleys on the afternoon of the second day.
This event will be of interest to regeneration, tourism and planning professionals working in coastal areas as well as coastal engineers as the aim is to demonstrate the benefits of bringing a range of disciplines together to maximise wider opportunities from major investment spends.
